{"id":171,"date":"2015-11-24T06:31:51","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T06:31:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/iisc-ghosh\/?page_id=171"},"modified":"2023-08-08T06:11:03","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T06:11:03","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cns.iisc.ac.in\/sray\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center\">Research Setup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our lab studies brain signals in two species (humans and non-human primates) and at four \u201clevels\u201d of recordings: spikes, local field potential (LFP), electrocorticogram (ECoG) and electroencephalogram (EEG), as shown below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cns.iisc.ac.in\/sray\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ResearchSummary.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/cns.iisc.ac.in\/sray\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ResearchSummary.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1904\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cns.iisc.ac.in\/sray\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ResearchSummary.jpg 720w, https:\/\/cns.iisc.ac.in\/sray\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ResearchSummary-300x108.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Different recording scales in humans and non-human primates<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><em>Microelectrode recordings from monkeys<\/em>: This allows us to record activity of single neurons using microelectrode arrays. We also get a second \u201clevel\u201d called local field potential (LFP), which represents the local activity of a few thousand neurons, by low-pass filtering the signal.<\/li><li><em>EEG from humans:<\/em> Complex behaviours such as attention are studied at a coarse \u201cnetwork\u201d level using EEG, in which electrodes are placed on the scalp.<\/li><li><em>EEG from monkeys:<\/em> We have modified our recording system that is used for microelectrode recordings to simultaneously record EEG from monkeys as well.<\/li><li><em>Electrocorticogram (ECoG) from monkeys:<\/em> ECoG is obtained from macro-electrodes placed directly on the brain, and is typically recorded from humans undergoing epilepsy treatment. We have collaborated with companies that make microelectrodes (Blackrock Microsystems) and ECoG arrays (Ad-Tech Medical Instrumentation) to design a hybrid electrode grid that includes both.
